DREAM OF JESSE
504/GWT

I’m a Latine filmmaker, screenwriter, and multi-media artist from Los Angeles, California (Glassell Park);  a first-generation graduate from Northwestern University; and a first-year graduate student at California Institute of the Arts. Learned in programs like RunwayAI, Unreal Engine 5, Unity, After Effects, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, DaVinci Resolve, and Blender; I am a futurist. I imagine a media boundless by ideals yet embedded in a human-made reality, created by people like me. My storytelling and production skills span from music videos  and short narrative films to experimental documentaries which have been selected in festivals from the National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) to the Defy Film Festival.

Nana, the Sun

This project is an extentended use of the “Nanahuatl” character/allegory, which is inspired by the Aztec myth Nanahuatl, an acne-ridden and abjected subject who sacrificed themself to become the sun deity, jumping into a bonfire to create a new Earth as the old one was dying.  I compare the myth to my own life, where I have also suffered abjection that disrupted my world and self-concept. Nevertheless, I choose to take my priveleges and position in life, and in stride all of the shortcomings, to help expand the collective imagination we possess.

To execute the affect I want to provoke – from feelings of anxiety to resoluteness – I experimented with RunwayAI by inserting my photography and videos into the algorithm rather than depending on its independent generation. In the production, most of the videos and all of the photography were shot by myself – however, being director of cinematography with the confluence of AI, I was also the ‘computer engineer’ in using RunwayAI. Moreover, I also produced the score and did sound design for the film, in addition to editing, coloring, and graphic design.
